Bill Gerhardt

Jazz

Bill Gerhardt, is a prolific composer and arranger. He teaches privately and in workshop settings or masterclasses. He is a founding member of the Jazz Composers Forum. Bill has traveled the world playing jazz music with the top musicians in the field. He has played most recently with Tim Horner, Francois Moutin, Marc Mommaas, Jed Levy, Jeff Brillinger, Joe Locke and Ingrid Jensen, Jackie Allen and Kendra Shank to name a few . He has two CD's Bill Gerhardt and Cotangent "Stained Glass" and "Thrive" coming out on the Steeplechase Label this year and two CD's "Cotangent" and Tony Moreno and Trio just released on the Art of Life Label.

Bill Gerhardt was born in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. His interest in music was encouraged by his father who also played piano. He began taking lessons at age nine. In high school, he was a member of the jazz ensemble under the direction of Bill Ewing. He continued his studies with Herb Drury in St. Louis and later attended North Texas State University. After touring the United States for five years, Bill settled in North Carolina and formed a quartet with bassist Ron Brendle to focus on original music. Their group won the 1 st prize at the 1988 down beat Music Fest and Bill was recognized for his composing and arranging.

In 1989 he moved to Amsterdam, Netherlands. He performed throughout Europe, Asia and Africa and recorded with various projects as both leader and sideman. His last CD with Pere Soto ‘Particular Vernacular' included guest-performances from David Liebman and Dave Douglas. Since 1999 Bill has lived in New York City where he has recorded with such artists as Billy Higgins, George Mraz, Billy Hart and Tom Harrell.

He is a member of a nine-piece group, The Staring Into the Sun Orchestra and a trio featuring Michel Gentile on flute and Masa Kamaguchi on bass as well as leading his own quartet. He is head of the advisory board and a founding member of the Jazz Composer's Forum in Asheville, North Carolina, a non-profit organization dedicated to performing and documenting new original music. In concert settings Bill's music has been heard on festivals, concerts, radio, television and in jazz clubs around the world.

His music has also been featured in an independent film by Robert Dew. Since his first professional job at age 15, Bill has played with Ben Allison, Benny Bailey, Jeff Ballard, Clarence Becton, John Betch, Michael Blake, Jeff Brillinger, Joe Daley, John Engels, Leonard Gaskin, Arjen Gorter, John Hebert, Ron Horton, Leonard Jones, Jed Levy, Tony Malaby, Ron McClure, Billy Mintz, Rutger Molenkamp, Tony Moreno, Idris Muhammed, Emily Remler, Mike Richmond, Roswell Rudd, Mike Sarin, Gary Thomas and Steve Wilson among others.

SINCE their formation in October of 2004, Asheville, NC based, Phuncle Sam has been firmly rooted in musical exploration, Asheville's own Improv~ Americana, Dead~Centric "jam band". Over three years of intense jamming and rehearsing finds Phuncle Sam with an ever-expanding body of original music.

The band has played local venues as the Westville Pub, Stella Blue, the Emerald Lounge and The Town Pump in Black Mountain and festival venues such as The Harvest Bash in Mars Hill and The Pig Pull at Deerfields.

Phuncle Sam has also worked with Bonfires For Peace playing in Asheville’s Pritchard park many times and also playing acoustic shows in smaller venues such as Malliprop’s bookstore and Rosetta’s Kitchen also for the Traveling Bonfires.

Phuncle Sam’s real testing grounds were at Bearly Edible (now Ophelia’s). Frankly, we lost track of how many gigs we played there, maybe close to twenty?

The band will also serve up quintessential interpretations of Jerry Garcia, Grateful Dead and many others. It’s been over forty years since the Grateful Dead began the long strange trip that generations have since embraced and enjoyed. Traditions born of trust, sharing, kindness and good will, formed a critical mass of optimism and musical joy. Sharing the music as well as crafts and art became a part of the community scene. These traditions eventually found there way into many concerts and festivals. The Garage is offering an experiment appropriate for Asheville, by presenting quintessential Grateful Dead-centric music and a space for vendors and craftspeople to share their wares. Asheville’s own magical Grateful Dead interpreters, Phuncle Sam will be steering the musical boat

Dan Joffe, (bass, vocals) ~~ From New Jersey, influences include the Grateful Dead, the Holy Model Rounders, Stone House and Mike Hutchinson. Dan has previously played with “Scarlet Fire”, “Monkeys With Car Keys” and “Sugarstick And The Boilermakers” among others.

Bill Evans, (guitar, guitar synth, vocals) ~~ From New York, influences run from Jerry Garcia to John Coltrane. Bill previously played in Asheville’s “Unidentified Filharmonic Orchestra”and “String Elixer”, upstate NY’s popular “Deeper Roots” and many other musical projects.

James “Stymie” Collins, (guitar, vocals) ~~ From North Carolina, influences include, The Grateful dead, Phish and Widespread Panic. Stymie previously played with “Universal Circle” and is a big Tar Heel fan.

Ned McGinn, (percussion) ~~ From Illinois, influences include The Grateful Dead, Trey Anastasio, String Cheese Incident and JJ Cale and he is an avid music collector. Ned has previously played with “Alligator Wine”

David Mulder, (piano and keyboards, vocals) ~~ From New Jersey, influences include Miles Davis, The Grateful Dead, King Crimson and Rusted Root. David started playing with NJ Ska bands and later played with “Cerberus Shoal” and the high energy jam band, “Blend”

John "Gio" Wyatt (Drums, Vocals) ~~ From Detroit & Ft. Lauderdale. influences include Pink Floyd, The Grateful Dead, Rush, Led Zepplin, down to Roots Reggae. With an extensive background in Rock & Roll & Reggae Music, Gio has played with many great artists including members of the Marley family. Gio also plays with the fine band Jerrod's Door.

Ron Moore

Ron Moore is a world traveled performer, songwriter, poet and comedian. His recordings are filled with an unusual poetic sensibility, and a worldwide view that comes from growing up as a missionary kid in Korea, then traveling with his concerts across the U.S., from Bulgaria to Korea, and from Canada to Equador.
He has released 13 albums of his own original music, as well as helped other artists develop their performance skills, and with their productions including Mark Heard, and Jan Krist who Ron produced a debut album for that received Billboard Magazine's Critics Choice Album of the Year award. Coming from an artistic and musical family, her earliest experience with music was playing the ukulele and singing when she was five years old. From age nine, she began teaching herself piano and taking flute lessons at school. Sharon 's search for a musical voice continued when she was fifteen and got a job so she could buy herself a guitar. She majored in the fine arts at Northern Virginia Community College in Fairfax , Va. and Ducret School of the in New Jersey ; studying drawing , painting, sculpture and dance. Sharon 's start in the music business came in the form of managing singer/songwriter Michael Fitzgerald from 1979 to 1981 in Red Bank, NJ . She handled sales and promotion for him in the New York Metropolitan Area.

Sharon was born in Newport , Rhode Island . Her father was raised in Bronx , NY and became a Naval Officer whose tours took the family to live on the East Coast in Rhode Island , Maine , Florida , Virginia , as well as traveling throughout the United States and Europe . Her mother, a history major and librarian grew up in Red Bank, NJ. Sharon became a resident of Asheville , North Carolina in 1984. Managing the family Chiropractic office and raising her two children there. The diverse music scene in Asheville re-kindled her interest in music. She began to study Vocal Technique with Amy Rae Stupka and piano to strengthen her understanding of theory and harmony. Her jazz vocal coaches include Jackie Allen, Jennifer Shelton Barnes, Jay Clayton, and Sheila Jordan . She attended the Swannanoa Gathering Music Camp in 2002, Jamey Abersold Jazz Camp 2003 and Sheila Jordan's and Jay Clayton's vocal retreat in in 2004 and 2005.

In 2001 Sharon began her association with a group of musicians, the Taken Back Quartet. In collaboration with these musicians which included Philip Whack, Sam Macy, Mike Holstein and Taylor Davis and with consultations from NYC pianist/composer Bill Gerhardt, she formed a non-profit organization dedicated to the presentation and documentation of original instrumental jazz.
It was well received by the community and after just four presentations supported through grassroots grants from the Asheville Area Arts Council. The Jazz Composers Forum, non-profit organization has produced a concert series, radio broadcasts and workshops throughout North Carolina, South Carolina, New York, and New Jersey for six years and while usually presenting at least two composers at each concert . As president of the Jazz Composers Forum; Sharon has worked diligently to present local, regional and national composers in serious concert settings.

To date she has presented over 200 listening room concerts of original instrumental jazz music . The Jazz Composers Forum has also held composer / small ensemble workshops and concerts at primary and university level schools. The Jazz Composers Forum is supported by the Susanne Marcus Collins Foundation and Business Sponsorships as well as individual donations . http://www.jazzcomposersforum.org/

She continues to study piano and double bass. Her regular visits to NYC allow her the luxury of coaching with Jay Clayton and Sheila Jordan. Her love of the music will inspire her to continue to grow and search out new musical horizons whether singing in her cool understated style or promoting cutting edge twenty first century music.

Sharon LaMotte and The Bill Gerhardt Quartet perform throughout the Southeast. She has a regular gig in the West Village NYC at Ido Sushi on Seventh Ave So. where she plays every couple of months and also every Monday at the Café on the Square 1 Biltmore Ave . Asheville , NC
